The 14th edition of the Excellence in the Millennium Award was held on Thursday, the 16th March 2017 at the Kairaba Beach Hotel.
This is an annual event in which we recognize and honor the top ten outstanding students from the Grade 9 exams.
On our request, West African Examination Council (WAEC) provides us annually with a list of the top ten outstanding students for the year.
The award was instituted by the Bank to help promote education and encourage academic excellence in the Gambia. The awards come in four segments:
1. D5000.00 and a computer tablet and certificate of excellence to each of the top ten outstanding students
2. D10, 000.00 to the school that produce the candidate with the best results.
3. D20, 000.00 to the school with the highest number of awardees.
4. D5,000.00 to the most outstanding student
The occasion was graced by the Honorable Minister for Basic and Secondary Education-Mrs. Claudia Cole; the Managing Director of Trust Bank Ltd-Mr. Ibrahima Salla; the Permanent Secretary for Basic and Secondary Education-Mr. Baboucarr Boye, Representative of the Head of National Office for WAEC-Mr. Demba Sawaneh and the Chairman of Conference of Principals-Mr. Muhammed Jabbi.
The Managing Director of Trust Bank Ltd, Mr. Ibrahima Salla said in his speech marking the occasion that “the purpose of this event is to help promote quality education, and to also acknowledge and celebrate the achievements of these hard working and deserving girls and boys.
He outlined the fact that other schools are now making the list of awardees which shows that the competition is getting more intense.
He said that Trust Bank will encourage excellence through the Excellence in the Millennium Award and congratulated the awardees for their hard work and dedication.
The Managing Director used the occasion to advise the awardees about the choices they make in their lives.
“Life in general is made up of an infinite number of choices. We make choices all the time, from the moment we wake up until we go to bed. Most of the decisions are small and only slightly impactful, but the big decisions that can change your lives forever are indeed tough to make.
Take a moment to weigh the choices you need to make in your lives, be it in your studies; in your families or in your friendships.
What you must begin to acknowledge is that the choices you make can bring you CLOSER TO or take you FURTHER AWAY from your dreams or goals.
If you choose to confront the options before you with courage, confidence and determination, you open yourself to a fulfilling path of your own design, filled with numerous possibilities.
You cannot achieve excellence in your lives if you do not manage yourselves. You cannot manage yourselves if you do not manage your choices. Manage your choices, and you will manage your lives”.
He went on to challenge the awardees to embrace excellence.
“If you declare Excellence as your life goal, then every area of your lives will be an opportunity for excellence to show up. Your academic results would be excellent, your relationships would be excellent, and your conducts would be excellent.
That is what we need in you as the future generation in order to achieve our aspirations in our quest to shape the NEW GAMBIA”.
On her part, the honorable Minister for Basic and Secondary Education-Mrs. Claudiana Ayo Taylor-Cole said that “education is a tool for sustainable development and a means to eradicating poverty. Therefore, any effort aimed at the attainment of these goals should be highly appreciated and vigorously pursued”.
She underscored the fact that the provision of education is largely the responsibility of government but the funding aspect of it remains a huge challenge. She therefore thanked Trust Bank for such a laudable initiative and implores the private sector in general to emulate Trust Bank Ltd to help achieve our national goals.
On his part, the representative of the Head of National Office for WAEC-Mr. Demba Sawaneh said “by committing yourselves to sponsoring such outstanding students, Trust Bank is contributing its quota in advancing the cause of education in the Gambia”.
Mr. Sawaneh went on to clarify the criteria used to determine the top ten outstanding students which has caused so much confusion recently.
He said that “other candidates may have had aggregate six (6) in the Gambia Basic Education Certificate Examination (GABECE) but the average total score of each candidate were used to determine the top ten”.
The following students were the recipients of the awards:
The awards for the school that produce the candidate with the best results and the school with the highest awardees both went to Presentation of Mary Upper Basic School.
The award for the most outstanding student of the 2016 GABECE went to Mr. Ebrima Bojang of Presentation of Mary Upper Basic School.
The vote of thanks was delivered by Mr. Ebrima Bojang. He expressed profound gratitude to Trust Bank on behalf of his fellow students for initiating such an award which recognizes the product of their hard work and encourages healthy competition.
